Yet another system update that doesn't do much of anything.
Wii owners around North America woke up this morning to find a familiar flashing blue light once again. Another system update has been released that doesn't do much of anything except attempt to "solve" a little problem called homebrew.
These updates seem to be occurring like clockwork every month or two, and I can't help but feel they are missing out on a huge opportunity to enhance the Wii's functionality (no, clearer commercials don't count.) Not only would they be able to fix some of the nagging issues with the Wii, but they would also help attract more users to get their systems online to recieve these much-desired upgrades.
We've recently heard of Nintendo of Europe's ambassador program as an attempt get more Wii consoles connected to the Internet, so you know it's a legitimate concern for Nintendo. But instead of enticing offline users by adding feature and functionality upgrades, they choose to continually annoy existing users by flashing their Wiis for an upgrade that is only necessary for a fraction of the Wiis sold.
Are things like DVD playback, faster SD card support or a more stable Internet browser just not possible with the upgrade capabilities of the Wii? Or is Nintendo choosing to focus their attention on their next console to implement some of the most desired changes?
